We had a slow morning on Christmas Eve by catching the 8:23 train into Onagawa and relaxing by the open public space in the center of the Onagawa shopping street. At 9:30 we visited the Kizna Friends shop where the founders of the shop gave us their story.
They explained how they became involved with the town. It was inspiring to hear how two people became so closely attached to Onagawa after the events of the 2011 tsunami. What’s more, is that you can see how the business has progressed and is continuing to support the citizens and community.
By 5:30 in the evening we saw the fireworks show. It was a great event as many members of the town came to the street, showing how the sense of community in Onagawa is strong.
We shared sushi for dinner with all the members in the camp. Afterwards, a small group of us headed to one of the local bars for a drink before walking back to our house. Another day well spent in Onagawa!
