Today Takahashi san, our new local friend we met last night in Garuya, took us for a drive to 3 sites: tsunami ruins, shrine and onsen.
Ogawa Elementary school ruins (小川小学校)
Our first stop was Ogawa Elementary school, a site that suffered one of the worst tragedies during 3/11 disaster, a place where 74 elementary school students and 10 teachers lost their lives.

It was truly heartbreaking trying to imagine what happened while walking around the school ruins…
But in the same time I realized how important it is to visit this kind of sites and hear the stories from the locals. I am so thankful to meet Takahashi san and hear his stories.
His stories made me realize how limited life actually is and made me reflect how I live my own life …
“Praying for exams” Shrine (I forgot the actual name :D)
This shrine is very popular between students who are about to take exams. Just by the stairs that take you to the shrine, there is a huuuge stone about to fall…but it just does not fall.
The students come and pray here not to fail their exam just in the same way as the stone does not fall. No wonder there is a huge crowd of students coming here just before exams period.
Oiwake Onsen (追分温泉)
This is a kind of secret local hot spring, with a very nostalgic atmosphere. The owner loves old stuff so he keeps around lots of old things like cars, games, vending machines and so on. Heard they also have great food, but this time we had no time for a meal. If u have a chance, do not miss it.
Lastly, if you are here to experience living in Onagawa, I have to tell you, you must listen to the locals’ stories. You must try your best to meet them, to be friend with them and be ready to listen. You will be surprised how much you can feel, experience and learn through talking to them. I surely was very surprised.
