Third Day in Onagawa (05/28)

Third Day in Onagawa (05/28)

On Tuesday we started our day by relaxing our feet at the foot spa right outside the Yupopo train station of Onagawa. Then we spent most of our day making Spain tiles and visiting the soap shop known as Kuriya. We talked to the owner of the Spain tiles shop and she was kind enough to share her story on starting her business and how her goal was to make the town more colorful. It took us two hours to make them and it is more difficult than it looks for sure, but the process was really fun!

Kuriya is a very interesting shop. From outside, it seems like a chocolate shop due to the way the soap itself is cut but when you go inside you can smell all the unique ingredients used to make the colorful soaps. They also have a soap making workshop that we participated in on Friday (05/31). On Friday we met the owner of the shop, Kuriya, who told us about how he got interested in making soaps because even though the soap itself is really simple to make there are so many ways it can be changed by changing the ingredients. He also makes limited edition soaps and he is constantly looking for new ways to make his business better.

In the evening we went to a bar known as Guruya Beer where we met a lot of local people of Onagawa. They were very warm and welcoming and tried to get to know us. We even went to the Izakaya with some of them to eat and ended up singing karaoke too, which was super fun and out of character for me to do. Overall, it was a fun day of learning to do new things and getting to know the people of Onagawa.
